About Valley
Manor
"The
Willows" (circa
1900) -the
former estate located at 1570 East Avenue
|
|
In 1967, the Presbyterian Residence
Center Corporation met in the Rochester Chamber
of Commerce Building to plan what would become the first
independent retirement community in New York State.
PRCC purchased the property at 1570 East Avenue from the United
Cerebral Palsy Association, which was relocating to the Al
Sigl Center.
The name "Valley Manor" was adopted, and with a
donation by Edward Harris, a partner at Harris, Beach, construction
began in 1969 on an innovative poured concrete design
by Carl Kalber, the architect who planned the Strasenburgh
Planetarium.
Valley Manor Apartments opened in July of 1971 to rave reviews.
The newspaper reported "You have to be at least 62 years
old to live in the Valley Manor...But from the way everyone
was 'oohing and aahing' at yesterday's dedication ceremonies,
many a person far shy of the three-score-and-two mark wouldn't
mind hanging their hat there."
